When I saw a trailer for this film, I saw it compared with “Fargo,” the Coen brothers classic. My spouse and I were both in need of a laugh so we went to peep it.

I must agree with at least one other review that it’s an absurdly predictable epic. Boy meets girl, they disfavor each other, yet topple in cherish and they all live happily ever after. That element of the record was a letdown. But there were enough laughs to redeem the epic.

I’ll paraphrase, and perhaps add a minute to another review: Rene plays Lucy Hill, a rising Yuppie corporate exec based in Miami. The company decides to send someone to Minnesota to halt one of their plants. None of the guys will do it so Lucy volunteers. She, in lawful, corporate tradition, has her gawk on corporate VP, something she’s going to pick up when she faithfully fulfills the company’s goals, apt?

Buy,Download, Or Stream New In Town! Click Here

Well, when she gets to MN, she has so slight perception of the conditions–cold, slippery–that she is, alas, a fish out of water. She meets her assistant, masterfully performed by Siobhan Fallon, who is an exaggeration of Frances McDormand’s role in “Fargo.” Her one-liners had both my spouse and I “ROFL”ing. I do have a comment though on Fallon’s (Blanche Gunderson’s) monolog: She asked Lucy if she’s found Jesus, and that became the cause for a burst of laughter from both Lucy and presumably the audience. I notion that ask to be slightly incongruous; it’s something one would have more likely experienced in, say, Mississippi or Georgia than in Original Ulm, MN.

Well, then, Lucy, while secretly trying to halt the plant, meets fireman Ted Mitchell (Harry Connick) when she flew off the frosty road. They eventually tumble in care for… Well, the synopsis has already been written here so I won’t tell it.

In the process, not only is appreciate fallen into, but Lucy decides that, shucks, these are nice people. (The tale reminded me of Michael J. Fox’s “Doc Hollywood” and countless other scripts.) She decides to sustain the site commence, and they advance up with a fresh product, blah, blah, blah.

From an just perspective, while I was laughing at the script, I found that fragment of the memoir to be a complete fantasy. Most of us know how corporations work these days. First, the product they came up with (no, I won’t give it away here and spoil the legend) wouldn’t compete with the corporate, pre-packaged and advertised product. Second, no, the corporation’s not going to say, “Aw, shucks, let’s be nice to these folks whom Lucy told us are are so quaint.”

Then, without giving any more away, Lucy and Ted plunge in appreciate, and they all lived happily ever after.

Hmmm. I’m quite considerable of the sage. So why do I give it four stars? Because of the laughs.

Again, I contemplate the belief of the accent was a product of McDormand’s academy award winning role in “Fargo.” In this film, they may have made a microscopic more of a caricature out of it. One of the Minnesotan characters, by the arrangement, was played by one of my heroines, Frances Conroy (I’m a vast “Six Feet Under” fan) . But it was so well done, it had me laughing thoughout.

Then there’s the scene when Ted and Lucy try to disguise their indiscretion so that Ted’s daughter didn’t know what happened, another side-buster. But the choreography famous of Lucy while Ted and Lucy were hunting and nature called was worth the notice of the mark.

No, I won’t give away any more than that, but it was hysterical.

Again, as others have already said and more will surely say, if you’re after a soul-enhancing, humanitarian, or realistic memoir, this one might not be for you. That ain’t the scheme life works except maybe in the movies. but if you’d like some hearty laughs–maybe a tiny to exclaim you from what’s going on in today’s economy, this is a side breaker.

Although marketed as a comedy, this has miniature in favorite with the DRECK that Hollywood has been churning out under the “comedy” brand (e.g. Bride Wars) because the point of this film is to progress to more sophisticated characterization and conception as its main character finds herself in a “fish out of water” setting, transplanted from Miami to a dinky city in Minnesota.

This film contains aspects of tranquil drama that enhance its credibility and respectability greatly. Characters become fully humanized as the film progresses, even if they at first seem like caricatures or stereotypes. That’s a main theme of the film – that people mis-judge each other all the time in ways that turn out to be unfair.

This is a good-hearted, well-played film that, although not really original in theme or position, carries a message that is well worth repeating, and does it very well through noble performances and an palatable script. Critics really do not attend the public well when they presume that something that’s been “done before” is therefore defective as a result, for films within the same subgenre are never truly identical, and it all boils down to the pickle that “critics” are reviewing EVERYTHING, regardless of their contain prior interest in the film, and “critics” often lack any sure training or expertise to disclose their opinions, and “critics” are often left simply reacting to each other in unique contests about who can collect the film that is the most “modern” – which usually ends up meaning the most aberrant and demeaning and cynical.

By difference, “Novel in Town” delivers an “worn” message that truly deserves to be a Hollywood tradition… a nicely American message of overcoming the various sociocultural divides that exist in our country, of cutting through the many stereotypes that downplay and dismiss other people (and categories and groups), and instead coming to enjoy the grand aspects of different lifestyles and preferences that exist throughout the country.

In this film, some of the social divisions that are addressed and dealt with include the urban/rural (or “puny town”) split, a blue-collar/white collar split, a college educated versus trades/crafts skill-based social class division, monetary wealth vs. budgeted fulfillments, religious/secular divides, and conflicting aspects of provincial/cosmopolitan perspectives. This is all enough to perform a very laudable, effective, gripping, involving, and yes, even thought-provoking film! Of the kind that can actually have people reflecting on and working on improving their enjoy shortcomings and building bridges to fetch along with others or at least able to gawk their points-of-view.

Very well done!!!!

A lot of people feel that the current “Slaughter” is the best one, but “Rip Off” is a distinguished capable sequel. This is aloof a “revenge flick”, but the characters are far more intersting. Jim Brown gets to have alot more fun and alot more sex. The added bonus is Dick Anthony Williams portrayal as a Pimp/Burgular who helps Slaughter bring down the Mob. The only downside to this one is that most of the songs from James Brown’s classic soundtrack are missing from the movie.

Army aged Slaughter’s latest adventure doesn’t lift him to South America (incongruously referenced as Mexico here), but there’s unruffled plenty of exertion to be found in the U.S.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Slaughter’s Big Ripoff! Click Here

The site here follows a bungled Mob hit on Slaughter that ends up killing a superior friend of his, and Slaughter’s efforts to regain revenge. Unlit Action Movie genre veterans abound in this film: Gloria Hendry (”Sad Belt Jones”, “Live & Let Die”) is the leading lady here, Marcia. Brock Peters is Reynolds, a cop who thinks some of his superiors are on the capture. They are, and the Mob boss tedious them is Ed McMahon, aka Duncan. Don Stroud is Kirk, the lead henchman, and Slaughter’s main foil here.

Again, a list of kickback recipients figures into the plot: Dick Anthony Williams (billed here as Richard) is Joe Creole, a pimp and professional burglar for hire(!), who becomes Slaughter’s temporary partner in heisting Duncan’s ledgers listing the politicians and other public officials receiving payoffs. This leads to a game of cat-and-mouse between Slaughter and Kirk, and the violent climax in one of Duncan’s nightclubs.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Slaughter’s Big Ripoff! Click Here

There are almost as many fight scenes here as in the first film; the opening sequence somehow combines a horse accelerate and a “fly-by” shooting by crop-duster. In keeping with genre standards, the women here are radiant and (mostly) of loose virtue. Here, Slaughter gets twice the care for action, as he beds a palm-reader early on, in addition to Marcia later. There is also a hilarious Scatman Crothers cameo as a numbers man. McMahon as Duncan gets less to do than you would think– also, unlike many Blaxploitation villains, he’s not portrayed as a racist (that’s Kirk’s department) : but seeing the Tonight Indicate sidekick as a crime lord is tranquil droll unto itself. We tranquil don’t find mighty of a perceive into Slaughter’s background (besides being ex-Army with a private arsenal, unbiased what does he do for a living? ) ; alas, such bright concerns are perhaps unnecessary to luxuriate in the fisticuffs and gunplay…

I haven’t read the book, but this documentary is not a rehashing of that book. It really speaks about life after the book became immensely approved. You observe the doctors going to speaking engagements and mentoring younger African Americans.

Like the book, this will really inspire viewers. For me, I liked how they “kept it trusty.” None of them turned their backs on less fortunate Dim folk. They unexcited embraced African-American vernacular and culture. None of them said, “Now that I’m successful, I want to be like Clarence Thomas on Condi Rice!” Watching the doctors buy as they climbed will warm the hearts of many.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Pact! Click Here

Having said that, I am peaceful concerned about some of the things I saw here. The work shows the doctors at an event with Bill Cosby. In fairness, the doctors never say they wholeheartedly embrace Cosby’s preachings. Level-headed, even in the Shadowy community, critics have said the Cosby is becoming conservative and somewhat classist. RuPaul wrote about how bitter and mad Cosby was when she met him. Cosby may have overestimated the impact that his sitcom was going to have on the nation. So to bring in Cosby muddies issues, rather than explain them. This documentary might have been stronger without him.

At one point, one doctor changes shirts while driving to an event. Yes, it shows that he has a lot of demands on his time. Peaceful, that was unethical to do as a driver. If he had killed another driver that draw, then his medical career and ability to mentor would have been slice short. If you come to an event in your white lab coat, what’s the colossal deal? I hope young viewers don’t reflect they can hold their minds off the road because this doctor did it. I was very disappointed seeing that.

The work does waste showing that the doctors are going strong in their field, however, this work implies that they really want to mentor more than they want to practice. If they kept busy in the hospital, maybe they could become presidents of those hospitals. I’m terrified that they reached a level and now objective want to succor others to do the same, rather than trying to arrive even further heights. They are non-doctors who can squawk young people to judge colossal. They may originate more doors by focusing on medicine, rather than trying to only do it part-time or on a little basis.

This documentary was very reliable to my students. My 9th grade class had to read the book over the summer. The documentary made them visualize the doctors and also fragment their worlds’. Along with being sterling to my students, it was well done and gave you a discover of how the doctors lived now that they are men.

Gantz is a worthless flaming pile of …ok, so i’m not allowed to execute that sentence here. the entire series consists of whiny crybabies talking to each other while pointing a gun at something. “wahhh, i can’t do it wahhh the aliens aren’t so abominable, wahhh i want my mommy!”

and another thing, apparently every woman in Japan (where the >snickersnicker< takes position) has colossal ol' floppin' triple F cups that require a wheel barrow to travel.

The good

This anime is definitely well detailed. I was amazed at the animational quality of the series from beginning to kill, which is where most other anime shows tend to fail. The sound was rather luminous and there was plenty of character development with some of the more major characters.

The bad

Simply effect, this anime was killed off extremely premature. If you’ve heard of Gantz before, it’s most probably due to the manga. If you’ve already read the manga, prepare to feel disappointed and shafted. This anime covers a total of 4 missions. The first 3 missions were 95% accurate to the manga. The last mission, however, was not in the manga and is something that I feel was do in the raze probably because the developers got tired of working on this anime. This is highly apparent because of the fact that the last mission goes on for about 5 running episodes, and cramped next to nothing ever happens with no ties on the storyline or the characters. Because of this, and because the anime only covers 3 out of the 11 missions that were prove in the manga, you’re going to feel left out. There were so many questions popping up in my head that should have been answered, but because the storyline was literally slice short, I’m finding myself digging through the mangas and counting the last 5 episodes of the anime to not be cannon.

Other thoughts

I have never, ever, seen an anime so geared towards adults. There’s more than enough profanity, nudity, excessive gore, and sexual situations to leave an impression. This may, or may not be a poor thing. But what struck me as annoying, almost as annoying as the lack of storyline and premature ruin, is the constant whining, crying, and otherwise moronic moments throughout the beginning of the series.

In short, if you’re looking for an anime to tide you over for a few days, or have read the manga and would like to perceive the first three missions in spicy format, you might delight in this collection. Otherwise, stick with the manga.

This is a terrific movie and I was thrilled to spy Angelina Jolie playing this fragment, (I first saw her in Hackers) . But in case you don’t know this, the DVD is missing 6 minutes of the movie. the only plan to have the extra 6 minutes is to have gotten the new release on VHS (or recorded in from HBO) . After Angelina became more well-liked, 6 minutes of her nude scenes were deleted from later re-releases of the movie including this DVD. But it smooth is a respectable movie.

This is it folks – a sterling “breakout performance”. We don’t obtain them often enough so we should pay attention when we do.

WARNING ::: This review reveals some station points!

“Gia”, a film for HBO, stars Angelina Jolie, Faye Dunaway, Elizabeth Mitchell and Mercedes Ruehl.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gia! Click Here

This film is the life-story of Gia Carangi, one of the first “supermodels”. How sizable a star/model was Gia? Well, Cindy Crawford was dubbed the “young Gia” and the “next Gia” – that’s how renowned she was.

Unfortunately, besides being the “face” of the day in the modelling world, she was also fairly renowned for her drug addiction and ultimate drop from grace.

If you want a more indepth depiction of Gia’s life – there are a couple of books available. The best being “Thing of Beauty: The Tragedy of Supermodel Gia”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Gia! Click Here

Back to the film.

Angelina Jolie BECOMES Gia in every sense of the word. Her performance is one of the best portrayals of dependable people in years. She is completely and philosophize believable. She captures what is surely the essense of Gia. She brings a desparate wanting to the character that you can feel.

Elizabeth Mitchell ( recently of “ER” fame ) co-stars and really provides an suited touch-stone for Gia’s tortured existance.

There’s nothing graceful about this film – it shows the whole tale, the drugs, the parties, the sex, the wound and the suffering. It depicts, with cramped filter, the USING of Gia and her decent into her fate.

It’s no surprise that Angelina won a Golden Globe for this fabulous performance. It’s no surprise that she was nominated for an Emmy either. You’re not able to consume your eyes off her. As a matter of fact, this is a remarkable awarded film – including a best actress award for Angelina Jolie at the LA Outfest.

Faye Dunaway is mainly here for star power – almost as if they weren’t obvious Angelina Jolie could pull it off. She’s okay here, but we all know that Faye has done some improbable work and here, she sort of phones it in.

Mercedes Ruehl plays Gia’s mother and she does a superb job. She’s a petite over the top but you suspect it’s an honest portrayal.

For the Angelina Jolie fan – it’s a MUST Peer, MUST Beget film. For others, it really is worth the time and money.

You don’t often gather a chance to seek a young star design an incredible film like this. You’ll watch itsy-bitsy tales of “Lisa” from her Academy Award winning performance in “Girl, Interupted” in Gia, but mostly you’ll notice an Amazing performance by Angelina Jolie. Really worthy.

FYI : There is an UNRATED version available on VHS that is currently not available on DVD. The UNRATED version contains more explict scenes ( specifically the shower sequence is longer ) .

In all, a grand film. Well written, directed and acted. A dependable gem. Thank you HBO.

Sometimes I marvel that so many people and movie critics put a question to every film to be Oscar material! Lots of action, hasty paced, frigid special effects–Doom is a solid, racy movie. The Rock and Karl Urban carried the epic forward (and provided some nice spy candy to boot) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doom! Click Here

Are you going to pick up deep philosophical meaning in it? Only if you’re drunk. Can you sit attend and let go for a couple of hours? Definitely. Bottom line is if you’re a fan of action movies, add this movie to the roster.

This one peaceful boggles me!

I read the finicky reviews and was not expecting anything decent but it wasn’t so abominable!

Yeah at times I was thinking “why did these people film this? Did they need money? ” because it is based on a game and has its acquire world, it does not follow what we on Earth would call a sage taken from life.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doom! Click Here

The special effects were rough at times and made me assume that whoever did Pac Man was collected doing his work on this movie, but since it’s based on a game I took it with a grain of salt. The creatures were beautiful wild and I like “alien inch on starship” whether under water, in outer position or on a Moon type of a movie.

I liked how positive characters, without spoiling anything, changed sides and there were a few nice residence twists. Karl Urban and surprisingly the dude known as The Rock were shapely trustworthy in this one.

Fun movie to peep, but it’s not deep soulful or Oscar nominee material.

Pretty remarkable explore candy, but overall better than I expected.

Compare Prices on Doctor Who – The Two Doctors

Like many Whovians, I’ve always harbored a abhor for Colin Baker’s portrayal of the Doctor. Abrasive, argumentative, and shameful, it seemed as if this Doctor was a throwback to his current incarnation. While being crotchety seemed to fit the elderly William Hartnell and added to his charm as Doctor Who, in the younger Colin Baker the attain was rather off-putting.

However, I have to say that in retrospect, the lad was actually lovely darned proper. I’ve picked up a few of Colin’s adventures on DVD, and have reach away with a modern appreciation of his rob on the Doctor.

The Second Doctor and Jaime visit a station site on behalf of the Time Lords. Some scientists have been tinkering with a time machine, and the Time Lords are concerned. However, the Sontarans attack and recall the Doctor and the prototype machine with the back of the station’s director. They status to utilize the Doctor’s DNA to enable them to complete the time machine and depart in time. Enter the Sixth Doctor and Peri, who try to recapture the Second Doctor and do Time itself from the Sontaran warlords.

The memoir is rather inventive in “The Two Doctors”, although the Spanish locations are kind of a end since the display could have been shot impartial as easily in the UK. The installment was somewhat disappointing in that the cannibalism angle was never fully explained or exploited, and the 45-minute episode length works against the best concepts of the demonstrate. There also seems to be a situation of meanness (so well-liked to the Colin Baker era), as one of the minor characters gets murdered pointlessly. The Doctor himself steps draw out of character and takes a life in a somewhat glib manner.

Still, we have Patrick Troughton, and even in the padded parts, he makes the exhibit a joy to leer. The villains are somewhat moving, as well, and the locations are glorious.

As for extras, there are two segments of raw footage (one in the studio, one on spot), that give the viewer an plan of how the note was save together. Another segment recounts the difficulties encountered in finding pleasurable locations not only for the tale, but for those fervent in the industry. There’s also a nice retrospect of Robert Holmes’ work on Doctor Who, which is a loving tribute to the unhurried writer by his co-workers on the expose.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – The Two Doctors! Click Here

The best portion of this residence is the segment where a young Who fan gets his wish and becomes share of a unusual, mini-Who adventure with Colin Baker, the Sontarans, and Teagan aboard the TARDIS, complete with impressive floor effects. I worship this segment for three reasons; first, it was very, very well-done work. Second, the kid proved to me that Colin’s Doctor had fans, as evidenced by his costume, patterned after Colin’s, and made “by his Nan.” Third, and best of all for me, was Colin’s Doctor talking smack to Teagan and pointing out what a mouthy, sour, distress in the neck she was. Teagan is the one companion that grated on my nerves to the nth degree, and one which I’ve always heartily despised, so plump marks to whoever wrote the segment, and for Colin, apparently acting “from the heart.”

Oh, and if all of that were not enough, let’s not forget Patrick Troughton’s second Doctor (along with companion Jaime) making a triuphant return to the series. That alone is worth the imprint of admission.

Overall, this is a surprisingly well-packed DVD for the Sixth Doctor, generally known as being the least-loved. If, like me, you never really cared for Colin Baker as the Doctor, you may want to try this one out. You unbiased might change your mind.

I could probably write a fresh about my tribute to “The Two Doctors” but I’ll do my best to retain it short. My favourite two doctors from the classic series (and indeed, overall) are Patrick Troughton and Colin Baker. So it doesn’t engage a genius to work out that this memoir is my favourite all-time. Why? Simply of the fun that the narrative seems to have. It’s as though everyone decided to choose a holiday and accomplish this anecdote while they were doing so.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – The Two Doctors! Click Here

The result? A dim comedy would be best how I would record “The Two Doctors.” Robert Holmes’s original creations, the Androgums, are best realised through him, as we hear about blood ties similar to Scottish clans like “Franzine Grig” or “Quarnzine Grig.” Shockeye in particular, craving a human, and every time he manages to choose either Doc, Jamie or Peri, someone always interrupts him. You can’t wait on but laugh out loud, reminds you of those expressionless telemarketers who ring you fair when you’re about to have dinner.

The script is littered with one-liners, ones that unbiased invent you do a double catch and laugh in surprise, from all sorts of characters, Oscar delivering some of the best, such as “My father slept in a steel helmet during the war,” What, objective the steel helmet? “Competent people, trained in the time of bandages,” and when Doc 6, Jamie and Peri advance out of the TARDIS and Oscar mistakes him for a policeman, “I can snort by your raiment that you belong to the plain-clothes branch” and the Doctor looks down at his heinous clothing, along with Jamie and Peri, who aren’t exactly in “humdrum clothes.” Not to mention Doc 2 and Shockeye when Doc 2’s been turned into an androgum and they discuss “shepherd’s pie” which apparently is a cannibal dish!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who – The Two Doctors! Click Here

Not to mention the TARDIS scenes, where Doc 2 and 6 abuse the machine in exactly the same device, The Doctor going through business cards “Christopher Columbus…” looks over at Peri, “He had a lot to reply for!”

The contrast between this and the other two multi-doctor stories is whereas “The Three Doctors” and “The Five Doctors” merely rode on an anniversary celebration (and thus barely have a storyto possess it together), “The Two Doctors” actually does have a myth to it, and actually balances out both that, and the two doctors turn up by coincidence. People have complained about that being a customary explanation for them showing up at the same time. Uh, hello? It may be worn, but it’s far more realistic than Borusa taking all five doctors from their timeline and then giving him enemies to fight, to weaken their chances of them getting what he wants (but that’s another review) As Doctor 6 says, “When you depart around time as mighty as I do, you’re mosey to accelerate into yourself at some point”

And finally, the scene that everyone whinges and complains about (with such tiny reason to) Terrible old-fashioned Colin sounds so weary about it in the commentary, wonder what the count is on how many people have complained to him about it. I am of course talking about the Shockeye killing scene. I have no quandary about it whatsoever. Approach on, people, the Doctor was desparate. Shockeye chasing him with the strength “to snap you in half with one hand” What’s the Doctor supposed to do. Impartial smile at him and say “That’s okay, slay me anyway”? And considering the Second Doctor worn a machine to waste a Cyberman in “The Invasion,” The Fourth Doctor archaic Sutekh to death, The Seventh Doctor manipulated Davros to wipe out an entire planet, the Tenth Doctor killed a Sycorax and on and on. I accumulate the feeling people criticise Colin Baker’s doctor simply for being Colin Baker’s doctor. I would rather depart with the Sixth Doctor than the Ninth Doctor who let all the people down who were fighting to support the Daleks at bay and then simply refused to employ the Delta Wave because it “made him a killer”

Overall, I wish I could give it six or seven stars, but five will have to do. Sight it as a sunless, snarky comedy and maybe you’ll glean recent appreciation for it.

There are many videos of Bayreuth performances, but this was the first. For that reason alone, it’s worth watching; fortunately it isn’t the only reason.

Unlike later recordings, this one includes curtain calls. I consider this was an favorable decision, since it evokes the thrill of being fragment of a Bayreuth audience. Only in Bayreuth will an audience remain absolutely calm until the last stamp has ragged, and then erupt in a paroxism of emotion – suitable or unpleasant. Listen carefully, and you’ll hear the point where the audience launch to impress their feet, causing the wooden structure of the Festspielhaus to resonate with a sound like impart. They obviously liked this performance.

And why not, indeed; it’s generous.

Gwyneth Jones performs both Venus and Elizabeth, as Birgit Nilsson did, befriend in the sixties. There were some difficulties – her lower register wasn’t quite up to the essentially mezzo allotment of Venus, and her runt stature meant that she had to stand on a box throughout act I (somewhat limiting her range of movement) . That’s her on the conceal of the DVD – you can search for the corner of the box if you sight closely. However, her acting ability, stage presence and total commitment to her roles more than compensated for these minor, er, shortcomings.

Spas Wenkoff’s Tannhauser was burly of manic glee (although this might have been a combination of close-ups and operatic acting) . Incredible strong snarl, with none of the whiny edge that I’ve heard in other Tannhausers.

The unbelievably young Bernd Weikl was a comely Wolfram – a role which he was to play many times. You might like to disagreement his performance here with the one in the 1994 Munich performance, with Waltraud Myer as Venus.

The orchestra, chorus and other performers all lived up the normal Bayreuth standards of perfection. Colin Davis maintained a appealing and expressive tempo.

This is the stout Paris version, complete with a somewhat prim Bacchanale, filmed in 1978, when this originally controversial production had been well-liked by the Bayreuth audience.

Technical issues? A few. After all, the film was made thirty years ago. The sound is almost perfect, but there are a couple of occasions where background noise intrudes. Thankfully they’re brief. The image quality is somewhat variable, particularly in the darker passages. Again, this isn’t obtrusive – I’m fair being picky.

Strongly recommended.

This is a recording of a live performance out of Bayreuth in 1978. Like most (though by no means all) Bayreuth audiences, this one is extraordinarily safe, so coughs at tainted times aren’t an notify and one gets all the benefits of a live performance without any of the drawbacks. There are curtain calls at the ruin of every act, but with the advent of the fast-forward button, these are not annoying.

As a warning, the production isn’t strictly “old-fashioned”: Landgraf and the minnesingers are dressed in Faschist/Nazi style and the Venusberg is reimagined as a sort of opulent prison (Tannhauser looks through the strings of his harp during the overture as if they are prison bars.) Most of the time, though, the production makes sense: the minnesingers carry harps, the singing contest is in the expansive hall of Wartburg, the Venusberg is underground and has its scantily clad nymphs, etc. Given what Wagner operas are turned into these days, this is as frail a production as one is likely to gain, unless one opts for the insensible and generally poorly sung/acted Met version.

Now, to procure to the *real* reason for buying this version: the cast. It’s far expedient to the Met’s version and the other Bayreuth version in terms of both acting and singing. Bernd Weikl sounds and looks distinguished fresher here (being 4 years younger than in the Met version) as Wolfram. If you don’t like Gwyneth Jones, conclude away: she plays both Venus and Elisabeth. I like her blooming (though I don’t cherish her), and though she tends to be a bit wild vocally her acting ability more than makes up for it. In the third act, she literally crawls across the stage and cries exact tears during her prayer to the Virgin. When she goes offstage to die, you maintain it. That said, I grasp the Met’s Troyanos for Venus, because Jones’ fach is not quite upright for the share (I like my Venus a bit more mezzo-ish), and the Venus (can’t remember her name) from the other Bayreuth Tannhauser was fair humdrum dreadful. However, Jones stands head and shoulders above the Met’s Eva Marton as Elisabeth (even if she can’t match Cheryl Studer), and as Venus she doesn’t give noteworthy to complain about, either.

And Tannhauser himself? Spas Wenkoff (who? ) does a astonishing job. The role of Tannhauser is one well known for being a voice-killer, but Wenkoff manages not only to sigh the notes but to inflect them properly for the drama. That his say and appearance are more gorgeous than the Met’s Richard Cassilly’s are also major pluses. He’s not a amazing actor (too noteworthy strange, creepy smiling) but he’s righteous enough to launch out with and only gets better from Act One on. His Rome Chronicle is Wagner candy, and his convey never shows any signs of slow.

This a a very well-balanced production, which is why I believe it works so well: the performers interact convincingly (unlike in the Met’s), conducting by Colin Davis is sensitive (unlike Sinopoli’s, whose major gash in Act 1 confuses me), and the singing standard is generally high–for the ’70s, which were dusky days for Wagner singing, the standard is very high indeed.

The technical details are as follows: There are subtitles in German, English, French, Spanish and Chinese, along with two options for audio: PCM Stereo and DTS 5.1 Surround sound, all of which can be accessed by the DVD menu. There is also a puny booklet detailing the production’s origins/interpretations.

This 1999 Washington Opera production of Puccini’s chocolate box of an opera isn’t perfect, but has many delights. The cast, all verismo stalwarts, have glamour, resplendent voices, and are decent-enough actors. Marcus Haddock looks rather melancholy clean-shaven here as the juvenile; his Don Jose at Glyndebourne is noteworthy more physically appealling. Richard Troxell, though, is comely and comic as Prunier. Both the female leads are seen to favorable advantage, with Inva Mula in particular a delight. The physical production is lavish but not completely overwhelming, with many witty perform touches in the second act, and a nicely simple beach cottage for the third act. Marta Domingo’s direction is intellectual, thoughtful and well-detailed. Uncomfortable, though, is her decision to impose a tragic ending on Puccini’s beget bittersweet resolution. This opera’s frequently characterized as TRAVIATA LITE; tacking on a suicide for Magda at the final curtain doesn’t carry out grand, except making that comparison seem weighted even more strongly in Verdi’s direction. This is probably the most appetizing of the several RONDINES currently in the DVD catalogue; fans of this opera, or Puccini in general, will like this dazzling DG release.

There are currently four DVD versions for La Rondine.

For my taste, this recent one from Decca is the best.

Martha Domingo presents the opera in a attractive and effective outmoded production.

I really enjoyed Ainhoa Arteta performance as Magda. Hers two Act I arias are sung with resplendent pianissimi and finesse which expresses vulnerability. She is very piquant in the finales of Act II and III.

Hopefully, the lavish Met production with Gheorghiu will appear on a commercial DVD (although it has a very faded performance by Samuel Ramey) . In the meantime, this production will do more than enough.

The writing for the first season of Burn Watch was favorable, very tight with though-provoking characters and situations. However, towards the ruin, a lot of fans were alarmed. Some of the helpless clients of the week were starting to feel a touch repetitive.

We needn’t have alarmed.

The second season unbiased finished, and I can say you that the writing is even better, the characters stronger, and many of the myth lines more compelling, than in the first season. It’s no wonder the reveal has doubled its viewing audience. I particularly like how the characters have evolved. Michael has dealt with some of his family issues, gotten closer to his brother, and understands that his mother really does care about him–even if that’s easier to rob when she’s not blowing cigarette smoke (literally) in his face. The dreadful guys are organized and radiant, which means he have to be even smarter. It’s trustworthy narrative telling.

However, even with all the other positives that made me pre-order the DVD dwelling as soon as it was possible, there are several particular episodes that stand out from the rest, which alone are worth the note of the DVDs. One of these involves Michael Westin trapped inside a bank during a robbery with a government agent, Bly, whom he blackmailed the first season and who hates Michael’s guts. Watching the respect form between the two, and the blueprint they wind up working together — not to mention Michael Westins design of dealing with the robbers — is delicious. It’s nothing you’ve ever seen before. It’s not Die Hard and it’s not like The Ransom of Red Chief (where a small boy makes kidnappers regret ever taking him to the point they wind up paying the parents to bewitch him aid) . From commence to accomplish, the robbers never figure out that they have a tiger by the tail. The only one with a clue how hazardous that Westin can be is Bly, who had read Westin’s dossier in season 1 and has been dancing wait on and forth with him to scrutinize who can top whom. The ending is particularly satisfying. So, I really loved “Awful Breaks” and doubted (laughable me) whether they could top this narrative line in the remaining episodes.

They did.

The season finale completed a though-provoking myth arc enchanting an ex-CIA agent, Victor, gone to the dismal side. This 4 episode narrative arc alone makes this season is a must-have for fans. What can one say about this fantastic character? Played by Michael Shanks in a recurring role, Victor took us through the gamut. We went from hating him and thinking he is a psychopath wavering on the edge of sanity (you were never quite positive how he was going to react to things), to realizing he was an incredibly tragic character and a cautionary legend of what Michael could have been in other circumstances. The emotional roller coaster we part with the characters on cloak as we learn of Victor’s aid chronicle (which comes out in the finale) and resulting changes in his relationship to Michael Westin is myth telling at its best.

I have not been a fan of Michael Shanks in the past. However, his acting here is truly inspired. It goes far beyond anything I’ve seen him do other than in “The Arc of Truth” in the prison scene when Shanks’ character, Daniel Jackson, finally gives up hope. It is ample of an Emmy. Moreover, even with the already stout supporting cast of Bruce Campbell (always worth watching and allowed some vast scenes in the 2nd season), Sharon Gless (as Michael’s mother who smokes while exercising to Jack LaLanne–which you have to study to realize how amusing that is), and Gabrielle Anwar (as the explosive Fiona), there’s something magical about the chemistry between Shanks and Donovan that seems to kick Donovan’s acting–already extraordinary–up a notch to a level seldom seen on the limited cover. And if the ending is horrid, the choices made surprising to the viewer, one cannot support but feel that the characters have been changed forever by this experience and nothing will be quite the same again. Perhaps best of all, it makes the viewer asks of season 3, what’s next? Because if there’s one thing the writers, actors, and producers have shown us, it’s that they understand pleasant anecdote telling, and can be trusted to execute choices that will maintain us on the edge of our seats, coming encourage for more.

I highly recommend this DVD area, especially if you haven’t seen the present on TV. Although most of the anecdote lines could work as stand-alones, there is an on-going tale arc (of how and why Michael got burned and what he’s doing to pick up his life wait on) that makes more sense if you leer them in order. The extras on the season 1 DVD plot were righteous (including Donovan and Anwar’s audition tapes), and I seek information from them to be equally edifying here. So far, I know of at least one extra that should be a lot of fun. Michael Shanks has reported recording a commentary track with Bruce Campbell and Matt Nix.

I deliver for many fans when I say I can hardly wait for June, and the launch of season 3 on USA network! Thank goodness Donovan’s contract has been extended for another 6 years (total 8 seasons)! I like this exhibit!

Mike, Fiona, and Sam are an outstanding group who are always getting into more danger than they bargained for, yet somehow manage to acquire their plot through the various encounters with a grin and a chuckle.

Quote from Wanted Man:

Sam: Mike, I gotta instruct ya, this is more fun than I expected.

I mean, I haven’t done this sort of thing since… Gee, since there was an East Germany.

Mike: Ecstatic you’re enjoying yourself.

Sam: So how are things at home?

Mike: A petite unique. Fiona likes to test relationships with the emotional equivalent of artillery fire.

Sam: Does she even want this guy?

Mike: I don’t know, I’ve never been able to figure her out.

Sam: Well, I’m not one to verbalize you how to live your life.

I’m a steady fan of dry humor, though I can never pull it off. The only time people laugh at me is when I’m being serious. My jokes- when I try to be comical -all topple flat- and nobody can bid when I’m serious or unprejudiced kidding. My coworkers would utter you that it makes for an ‘interesting’ working relationship (if they’re being nice) . I… don’t know what it is.

So – when I came across this reveal, I started watching the reruns from the first season, as a run-up to the 2nd season… and I’ve been really enjoying the expose. It seems to be very educating – there are things that are presented here that I never belief about – in each episode… I explore a different plan of thinking about things, a different draw to do things, collect things accomplished.

Things never quite turn out how I demand them to, or go off in directions that I didn’t anticipate. Then again, I’m a computer guy: what I know about people you can fit on a (corner of) a postcard.

I admire the point to because of the dry banter, unbiased the apt amount of conflict (I give it a PG10 for the average American), and the fresh map of thinking about things. Oh. The acting is outstanding, the dialogue is super and very well done.

I’m definitely looking forward to more shows. My other ‘top of the list’ television shows include Life (NBC) and Firefly (which the FOX network brainaics cancelled) .

Great indicate, immense acting, ample position, unbelievable writing – hopefully the USA network will continue to gaze the value in this series for quite a while yet.

Quote from Turn and Burn:

Mike: Fi – accumulate me a sniper rifle and some C4.

Fiona: Oooh – I like where this is going…
